The successful launch of the Ariane 5 rocket from Kourou in French Guiana breaks earlier records for payload carried. At 23:29 CET on May 4th the 50 m long space vehicle lifted away from ELA-3 launch zone at Europe’s Spaceport in the small South American country.
An immense payload of 9,5 tons was carried using the ECA heavy-lift configuration which delivers a trust of 13000 kN (kilo Newtons). The Astra 1L and Galaxy 17 satellites was put into standard geostationary transfer orbit, making for 7 successful launches in less than a year. The Astra satellite will provide TV broadcasting to continental Europe while the Intelsat’s Galaxy satellite will deliver TV and telephony services to North America.
It is the 9th Astra mission and 45th Intelsat mission to be carried out by Arianespace since the French based company was founded in 1980 as the world’s first launch service company. The company is owned by a consortium of both commercial and political share holders from 10 different European countries. The Ariane 5 rocket alone has had 25 successful liftoffs.
Arianespace rapports packed order books which also include supply missions to the International Space Station later this year. The production of an Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is underway which will be mounted on top of the Ariane 5 rocket and will be able to deliver 7,5 tons of supplies to the station.
